First Problem: How To Display Options for Tees
Share
I created a business page on LinkedIn for the nascent Pablo Cain Designs business. Here is the pertinent info from the first article I posted about running Pablo Cain as a business.
It began with some introductory remarks about the plan to use LinkedIn as a sounding board related to getting a business off the ground, and then it continued:
Pablo Cain Designs specializes in black tees and tanks. I believe in sassy designs that get comments (and maybe an occasional eye-roll.) I have developed a document that contains Pablo Cain Designs' guiding visions and target customers. I'll share that with you later.
Right now, I want to get to the first real challenge I am facing: how to present all of our options on the website. I have at least named the options:
- Design - what the shirt says
- Style - basic crewneck, organic heavyweight, tank top, women's fitted shirt, etc
- Color - mostly black for now, but there are some wildcard color options
- Size - duh.
Right now, the same design has three listings: Unisex, Men's and Women's styles. Each listing has 3 to 9 style options. You click buttons to see the options.
This seems to work okay with the Shopify platform I am using, but here is the rub: IT TAKES FOREVER TO SET UP A NEW DESIGN. I feel like I am making a ton of options that will never be used.
So, I ask you: how many style options do you want when you buy a tee-shirt online?

Right away, I got a comment from a Paul Mathias: I like to see lots of options for things I might buy online, as long as I don't get overwhelmed. The trick is in how it is presented.
And then I followed the obvious route of investigating other tee-shirt sites to find what THEY do. Interesting results: quite the mixed bag. Two sites only presented one style of shirt, but loads of colors. One other provided a semi-complicated way to select styles. I noticed that it did not offer too much in the way of describing the styles.
And then (!) someone purchased one of the "other" styles on my site, a reinforcement that what I am doing is working!
So, for now, I will continue with the painstaking process of providing loads of style options for each shirt. Hey, my labor is free, right?
